Dracula (1931)

Bela Lugosi, the cape and the accent — and a Spanish version shot on the same sets.

This is the film that decided what Dracula looks and sounds like, and Universal made it twice.

You want the Dracula everyone else is imitating, and then the Spanish-language version shot on the same sets.

What it keeps and what it changes

Keeps: the castle, Renfield, the asylum and the hunt, by way of the 1924 stage play.
Changes: the scale. It is short and stagey, Renfield makes the trip to the castle instead of Jonathan, and the Count dies off screen.

Whose story is it?

the Count’s presence more than his part.

How much time does it ask?

1 hr 25 min, Tod Browning directing. The Spanish version, by George Melford with Carlos Villarías and Lupita Tovar, runs 104 minutes.

Universal: digital, Blu-ray, DVD and 4K Ultra HD, alone or in the Complete Legacy Collection.
