Nosferatu (2024)
Robert Eggers remakes Murnau, a century on.
Go back to the silent film’s plot and make it frightening for an audience that has seen every vampire film since.
You want the recent one, and you want it to frighten you.
What it keeps and what it changes
Keeps: Murnau’s outline — the journey east, the ship, the plague — and his Count Orlok.
Changes: the scale. It is a large, slow, cold period film.
Whose story is it?
Ellen Hutter’s, as in Murnau’s film.
How much time does it ask?
A feature, written and directed by Robert Eggers.
Focus Features, released 25 December 2024; Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe.
